Peets is a member of Utz Certified, an independent not-for-profit organisation that, through its certification, sets the standard for responsible coffee producing and sourcing. Utz Certified answers two important questions for roasters:

Where does your coffee come from (Transparency in the coffee chain)
How your coffee was produced (Code of Conduct in origin country)

Utz certification assures consumers that they've addressed social and environmental issues in sourcing. Utz creates opportunities for all coffee farmers (estates and cooperatives) to improve farming and managerial practices. The Utz scheme involves a rigorous program at farm level that makes a real contribution to farmers' lives: better yields, efficiency and quality. Farmers meet market expectations by demonstrating their professionalism through implementing internationally recognised social and environmental practices. This leads to better business opportunities: better terms of trade and a better price for a better product.

Good coffee no longer just means good taste, quality and price: today's consumers also demand it be made with care for people and the environment. Utz Certified enables us as a coffee roaster to assure our customers that agrochemicals, if used, are used correctly, that children have access to education, that workers and their families live in appropriate housing, that workers have access to healthcare and training, that their labor rights are protected, that farmers are empowered with professional coffee growing and marketing techniques. In other words: our customers can keep on enjoying their coffee and trust that Utz Certified takes care of the process.

Utz means "good" in a Mayan language from Guatemala, where Utz Certified started as a partnership between growers and buyers…good in the broadest sense, good from the inside.
