Grounds for Health is an international non-profit organization founded in 1996 by specialty coffee industry professionals to provide health care services to coffee-growing communities in Mexico and Central America. Its premise is that good health is a basic necessity to productive societies. And the primary focus is the early detection and treatment of cervical cancer, a leading cause of death in women in low-resource settings. Cervical cancer is an easily preventable disease. We can cut the rate of cervical cancer by more than 50% if you will help Grounds for Health provide low-cost screening and treatment services to women in coffee-growing communities.
Grounds for Health works to create sustainable and effective cancer screening programs in coffee-producing regions. To realize this goal, GFH collaborates with regional coffee unions, community members, and local health care professionals to increase awareness about cervical and breast cancer and to improve the existing cancer screening infrastructure by:
• Collaborating with local physicians, social services agencies and community members.
• Organizing cervical and breast cancer screening campaigns staffed by local health care providers and American volunteers.
• Providing equipment, training and technical assistance.
• Working with local hospital personnel to develop efficient record keeping and referral systems.
• Developing a network of trained community health promoters.
• Educating women in the community about cervical cancer and empowering them to take control of their health and well-being.
• Building relationships between medical professionals and fostering a spirit of international exchange.
